For a Florida family vacation there are all kinds of attractions and activities guaranteed to give each member of the family a fantastic time. From the traditional, well-advertised Disney World to the lesser-known Sanibel Island to the south of state Florida offers a wide variety of opportunities for family vacations.
For most people the idea of a Florida family vacation means one thing: Disney. Located in Orlando, Disney World includes four huge theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There are also two waterparks which at certain times of the year are packed by noon.
If the idea of a crowded and expensive theme park sends shivers of fear down your spine, then take the family to the Space Coast. Time your visit so the family can watch a shuttle launch. Then visit the Kennedy Space Center and the US Astronaut Hall of Fame before wandering thru the Cocoa Village historic downtown with its many specialty shops, brightly painted murals and fun dining experiences. Don’t forget to visit Ron Jon’s Surf Shop, open 24 hours, and a must see.
To the west of Orlando on the Gulf of Mexico is Clearwater Beach and St. Petersburg. There are numerous family-friendly resorts and great activities such as some of the best shell-hunting in the state, dolphin watching and the fun Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise. Visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium or take a day trip to Tampa Bay and visit Busch Gardens. Another must-see and FREE attraction is the daily Sunset Festival on Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach where artisans and street performers provide entertainment and fun.
In the north, near Tallahassee is Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park home of one of the world’s largest fresh water springs, a true natural wonder that is almost three acres across. There is also an old historical lodge which still provides basic overnight accommodations and dining. Just a note: many of the “Creature from the Black Lagoon” underwater scenes were filmed at Wakulla Spring.
There are so many things to do during a Florida family vacation that you may need to schedule several just to see and experience even close to everything. Many of the fun activities are free or very low cost, so that even on a budget families can enjoy a Florida vacation.
